A biomarker is something that can be measured in the body and gives information about a condition. It might be measured in blood, spinal fluid, or through scans. In ALS/MND, biomarkers are a major focus of research, because better biomarkers could help in several ways.
What biomarkers could help with:

- Tracking the condition. Measuring how it is changing over time.

Ways to take part:
- Through clinical trials. Many trials collect biomarker samples (such as blood or spinal fluid) as part of the study. If you join a trial, biomarker research may be part of it (see the clinical trials card).
- Through research registries and biobanks. Some registries and biobanks collect samples and information specifically to support biomarker and other research. Sometimes this involves relatively little burden (see the research registries card).
- Through studies run by your ALS/MND centre. Specialist centres often run their own research, including biomarker studies, that you may be able to join.
What involvement might mean:
- Giving samples. Usually blood; sometimes spinal fluid (via a lumbar puncture) or other samples, depending on the study. The study team will explain exactly what is involved and any discomfort or risks.
- Sharing information about your condition over time.
- Consent. As with all research, you would be given clear information and asked to consent, and you can withdraw at any time.
Things to consider:
- Weigh the burden. Some sampling (like spinal fluid) is more involved than a blood test; the team will explain what each study asks, so you can decide what suits you and your energy.
- Will you learn your results? Studies differ. In many, individual biomarker results are not given back to participants, because they are collected for research rather than for your personal care. Some studies do share some of your own data with you. Ask each study what to expect.
- Reputable settings only. Take part through established trials, registries, or your ALS/MND centre. Avoid unproven private "biomarker testing" offers.
