ALS Untangled does not endorse ayahuasca for ALS
Original source
Ayahuasca (opens in a new tab)ALS Untangled reviewed a report of one person who appeared to experience an ALS reversal after a single dose of ayahuasca and other alternative treatments. The review said a single dose was unlikely to have caused the reversal and that an unrecognised ALS mimic syndrome was a more plausible explanation. It does not endorse ayahuasca to slow, stop or reverse ALS progression.
Why this matters
This review does not provide evidence that ayahuasca benefits people with ALS or changes treatment options. The review reports documented harms, including hospitalisation, intubation and death, along with theoretical risks such as hypertensive crisis, serotonin syndrome and birth defects.
Limitations and context
The evidence described is a single reported case assessed in an expert review, not proof of a treatment effect. The review identifies alternative explanations and does not establish safety or effectiveness. It also reports harms associated with ayahuasca use.
