ALS Untangled finds no evidence that PoNS slows ALS progression
Original source
PoNS Device (opens in a new tab)ALS Untangled reviewed the PoNS™ electrical stimulation device and found no clinical or preclinical evidence testing it in people with ALS. The device’s effects on ALS progression are unknown, and evidence from multiple sclerosis may not apply to ALS. ALS Untangled does not support using PoNS™ to slow, stop or reverse ALS progression.
Why this matters
People with ALS should not assume that PoNS™ can change the course of their disease. The device may be relatively safe, but its substantial cost and prescription-only status could limit access, and its effectiveness for ALS has not been established.
Limitations and context
This is an expert review, not a clinical trial of PoNS™ in ALS. The assessment is based on the lack of ALS-specific preclinical and clinical data; future research would be needed to determine whether the device has benefits or harms for people with ALS.
