Coenzyme Q10 did not show enough benefit in an ALS phase II futility trial to justify a larger efficacy trial. For MitoQ, evidence described in ALS-relevant cells and animals suggests effects on mitochondrial and oxidative-stress pathways, but this has not established a treatment benefit in people with ALS or MND. Trials in Parkinson’s disease also found no clinical benefit from either approach.
Why this matters
MitoQ’s ability to target mitochondria is a biological rationale, not proof that it changes disease progression or daily function. For people with ALS or MND, the evidence described here does not support treating MitoQ or coenzyme Q10 as proven disease-modifying therapies.
