Bulbar onset

Describes ALS/MND that began with changes to speech or swallowing.

What it means

Onset simply means where symptoms started, not where they stay. Bulbar onset means the first changes were in the mouth and throat. It is recorded because it affects which support is needed first, and it appears in research as a way of grouping people.
