Cognitive screening

A short set of tasks and questions checking planning, language and behaviour, designed so that weak speech or hands affect the result as little as possible.

What it means

A screen rather than a full assessment. It is designed for ALS/MND specifically, so weak speech or hands affect the score as little as possible. A family member is usually asked about behaviour separately, because some changes are easier to see from outside.

Why you might hear it

  • Many clinics do it routinely rather than because of a concern.
  • The version most used is often called the ECAS.
