Fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing
A swallowing assessment done with a thin camera through the nose, without X-rays.
What it means
A very fine flexible camera passes through the nose to sit above the throat while you eat and drink. It gives a direct view, uses no radiation, and can be done at the bedside or in a clinic room.
Why you might hear it
- It is the alternative to videofluoroscopy, and some services offer only one.
- It is particularly useful for seeing how secretions are managed.
