A review of 28 studies on when communication support should start. It found the point at which a communication aid is needed usually falls between one and five years after diagnosis and varies a great deal with where symptoms began, and that existing best-practice guidance does not tell clinicians how to judge the right moment. So early review is sensible, but there is no settled timetable.
