    Overnight, breathing can become shallower and less effective, so carbon dioxide can build up without the person noticing.

    A review that describes the same sequence: as the breathing muscles weaken, ventilation drops markedly during dreaming sleep, and a rise in carbon dioxide is usually the first thing detectable, before oxygen levels change at all.
