A retrospective study of 220 people with chronic neurological diseases who developed acute respiratory failure found that 33.6% died in intensive care. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) accounted for 14.1% of the cohort. Among people discharged from intensive care, longer-term survival patterns were more favourable among those receiving home non-invasive mechanical ventilation, although deaths clustered in the first months after discharge.
Why this matters
The findings may help clinicians plan respiratory and nutritional support after intensive care for people with neurological diseases, including ALS. However, the study combined several conditions and does not show that home ventilation improves survival for people with ALS specifically or change treatment recommendations on its own.
Limitations and context
This was a retrospective study from one level III respiratory intensive care unit. It included mixed neurological diseases, and the reported survival associations were not presented as ALS-specific results. Because the study was observational, the associations do not prove that home ventilation caused better survival. The results may not apply to all hospitals or patients.
