A pilot study tested dimethyl fumarate in pregnant guinea pigs eating a Western diet. The treatment did not improve maternal, fetal or placental outcomes, and it reduced placental Sod1 gene transcription. The study reported no overt harm, but it did not investigate ALS or motor neurone disease (MND).
Why this matters
This research does not currently affect ALS or MND treatment. It provides early pregnancy-safety and biological data in guinea pigs, but the authors said further research is needed before considering dimethyl fumarate or related drugs as pregnancy treatments.
