Somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) abnormalities were found in 75% of 267 people with confirmed motor neuron disease (MND). The abnormalities occurred at similar rates in upper- and lower-motor-neuron-predominant groups and were not significantly associated with motor evoked potential findings. The researchers concluded that increased SEP amplitudes may reflect sensory-cortex hyperexcitability rather than impaired sensory signal conduction.
Why this matters
The findings suggest that sensory cortical circuits may be involved across the MND spectrum, not only motor pathways. SEPs could provide additional information during diagnostic assessment, but this retrospective study does not show that SEP testing changes diagnosis, prognosis or treatment.
Limitations and context
This was a retrospective analysis of 267 patients who had already been diagnosed with MND and underwent standardized testing. The findings are physiological associations, not evidence that SEP testing improves care or that sensory-cortex changes cause MND.
