Researchers identified a previously unrecognised disease-associated motor neuron state in the SOD1-G93A mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The state appeared before motor neuron death and was accompanied by early changes in nearby glial cells. Human ALS-linked genetic regions overlapped with some of the regulatory changes seen in the mice.
Why this matters
The findings may help researchers study how motor neurons become vulnerable in ALS and identify molecular pathways for future research. They come from mice and do not yet change treatment for people with ALS.
Limitations and context
This is a bioRxiv preprint reporting work in the SOD1-G93A mouse model, not a confirmed clinical finding. The study used molecular profiling and does not show that targeting the identified state benefits mice or people. Whether the same cell state and timing occur across human ALS remains to be established.
