A scoping review identified six interventions for families facing a parent’s life-threatening illness. Across 15 included articles, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other progressive neurological diseases were represented only to a limited extent. The interventions mainly provided psychosocial, educational or peer support and were generally viewed as helpful by families.
Why this matters
Families affected by parental ALS have few disease-specific support options identified in the research. The review points to a need for early, accessible support for children, parents and whole families, but it does not show that any intervention improves health outcomes or changes ALS treatment.
Limitations and context
This was a scoping review, not a trial of an intervention. Only 15 articles describing six unique interventions were included from 5,172 records, and most concerned cancer rather than progressive neurological disease. The findings were descriptively summarised, and ALS-specific evidence was limited.
