A review describes reported differences in gut microbial communities in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It says many mechanistic findings come from experimental models, while early clinical studies of microbiota-directed treatments have shown encouraging signals across neurological diseases. The evidence is not yet strong enough to guide routine treatment.
Why this matters
This may help researchers identify biological pathways for future ALS studies. It does not currently show that changing gut microbiota benefits people with ALS or change clinical care.
Limitations and context
This is a review, not a new clinical trial. The evidence varies across diseases and studies, with differences in populations, methods and treatment protocols. Much of the mechanistic evidence comes from experimental models, and well-controlled, longitudinal human studies are still needed.
