A systematic review and meta-analysis found that people with occupational pesticide exposure had higher odds of developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Across six studies, the pooled odds were 1.6 times higher, with somewhat higher estimates for herbicides and for higher exposure levels.
Why this matters
The findings add to evidence about possible workplace risk factors for ALS. They describe an association in observational studies and do not show that pesticides cause ALS or change treatment for people living with the disease.
Limitations and context
The analysis included only eight case-control studies, with 1,734 ALS cases, from 767 screened publications. The authors reported some heterogeneity, and exposure assessment methods and older publication dates influenced effect sizes. The findings show an association, not proof of causation.
