An exploratory study tested a dry-sensor electromyography (EMG) switch with 12 people with physical disabilities. The switch worked in some situations where conventional switches did not, and some participants reported less effort and fatigue. It also caused more false activations, and setup was a usability barrier.
Why this matters
The findings suggest EMG switches could be useful for some people with motor neurone disease (MND), particularly when other switch-access methods are not suitable. This early study does not show that the switch improves daily communication or independence, and it does not change treatment. Further development and testing are needed.
Limitations and context
