A case-control study found no significant difference in micronuclei or nuclear bud frequencies between 20 people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and 20 matched controls. The markers were measured in cells collected from the mouth.
Why this matters
The findings do not support an association between ALS and these two genetic-instability markers in oral cells. They do not change treatment or establish whether the markers are useful for diagnosing ALS or tracking the disease.
Limitations and context
This was a small case-control study involving 20 people with ALS and 20 controls.
