A lightweight textile exoskeleton glove enabled a person with severe right-hand impairment from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to grasp objects and perform tasks including feeding himself. The system used wrist and thumb assistance alongside surface muscle signals, motion data and machine learning to predict intended grasps. The study also tested the glove in six people after stroke and found greater assistance in those with severe impairment than in those with moderate impairment.
Why this matters
This device could assist people with severe hand paralysis who cannot reliably grasp objects. The finding comes from one person with ALS, so it does not yet show that the glove will work broadly or change ALS treatment. Its usefulness for people with moderate remaining hand function appeared limited and dependent on the task.
Limitations and context
The ALS result was a single-patient report. The additional validation involved six people with stroke, not ALS. The study was published as a primary research article, but the reported results do not establish long-term benefit, safety, durability or effectiveness across a larger ALS population.
