A prospective study of 965 people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) found that premorbid behavioral regulation was most strongly associated with later behavioral impairment. Higher education and social exposure were also associated with lower odds of impairment, although effects varied by assessment and domain.
Why this matters
These findings may help researchers identify people with ALS who are more vulnerable to behavioral changes. They do not establish that education or social activity prevents impairment, and they do not currently change treatment.
Limitations and context
This was an observational study, so it cannot establish causation. Behavioral measures were family-rated, and the second assessment was available for only 633 participants. The study was conducted in a prospective tertiary-center cohort, and the authors said further work is needed before these factors can support early risk stratification.
