An umbrella review found that quantitative susceptibility mapping, an advanced magnetic resonance imaging technique, detects disease-specific changes in tissue magnetic susceptibility in ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. In ALS, reported changes involved the thalamus, motor cortex and hippocampus, and were associated with cognitive impairment and upper motor neuron signs. The review described QSM as promising for diagnosis and for studying iron-related mechanisms, but did not establish a treatment benefit.
