Using body measurements to better monitor weight loss in people with MND
A study presented at the International Symposium on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Motor Neurone Disease (MND) tested simple body measurements as indicators of nutritional state. The study followed 24 people with MND for up to 9–10 months, with 14 completing the final assessment. In one highlighted participant, a 7% weight loss accompanied a 21% reduction in upper-arm muscle area and a 13% increase in triceps skinfold thickness.
Why this matters
These measurements could provide clinics with a practical, low-cost way to track changes in muscle and fat when regular weighing is difficult. The findings do not yet change treatment or show that the measurements improve outcomes.
Limitations and context
This account comes from an organisation’s report of conference-presented PhD research, not a peer-reviewed primary research paper. The study was small, only 14 participants completed the final assessment, and the group had relatively slow disease progression. The detailed muscle and fat changes highlighted come from one participant, so larger studies are needed to confirm how useful these measurements are in routine care.
