Researchers tested 54 PM10 samples collected at three Catalan sites in 2022. In human neuroblastoma cells, samples associated with winter biomass burning produced stronger cell damage and oxidative stress, while a spring-summer component selectively reduced acetylcholinesterase activity without causing cell death. The study did not investigate amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neurone disease (MND).
Why this matters
The findings may help researchers understand how different air-pollution sources affect nerve cells. They do not show that PM10 causes ALS or MND, do not establish effects in people living with these diseases, and do not change treatment.
