Cylindrospermopsin caused cell damage in neural progenitor cells and BrainSpheres, laboratory models made from human induced pluripotent stem cells. It also changed the activity of genes linked to nervous-system function, inflammation and oxidative stress. Microcystin-LR did not significantly reduce cell viability in neural progenitor cells at concentrations up to 60 µM in the tested conditions.
Why this matters
The findings add evidence that cylindrospermopsin may have effects on human neural cells and support including possible nervous-system effects in cyanotoxin risk assessments. This laboratory study does not show that either toxin causes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or motor neurone disease, and it does not change treatment for people living with ALS/MND.
Limitations and context
This was an in vitro study using cell-based models, not people or animals. The results were observed under specific laboratory concentrations and exposure periods, so they do not establish what happens after real-world exposure or whether the findings are relevant to ALS/MND. The source is one primary research article; human health effects still need to be established.
