Electroacupuncture at specified points near the spine improved movement, muscle-fibre measurements and motor-neuron counts in mice carrying an ALS-associated gene. It also extended the mice’s survival and reduced markers linked to NLRP3 inflammasome activity in the spinal cord. The findings suggest a possible anti-inflammatory mechanism, but they have not been shown in people.
Why this matters
This may help researchers investigate NLRP3-related inflammation and electroacupuncture as potential areas for ALS research. It does not currently change treatment for people with ALS because the study was conducted in mice and did not test safety or effectiveness in humans.
Limitations and context
The study involved a mouse model, with 18 mice in each treatment group, and treatments lasted four weeks. The results may not predict effects in people with ALS.
