A study found that changing ceramide metabolism in glial cells caused movement problems that worsened with age in adult flies. The changes also altered brain lipids and lipid droplets, small structures involved in storing fats. Restoring one ceramide-transport protein in glial cells partly rescued movement problems in animals lacking that protein.
Why this matters
The findings point to glial lipid regulation as a possible factor in age-related motor problems and suggest that lipid droplets could be useful indicators in research. However, the work was conducted in flies and does not show that changing this pathway treats ALS or other human motor neuron diseases.
Limitations and context
