Introducing Katy – one of the newest members of the Research Team
Katy has joined the Motor Neurone Disease Association’s research team after working in neuroscience research at the University of Sheffield. Her previous work included studying mitochondria in patient-derived cells and testing more than 1,000 chemical conditions in early drug-discovery experiments involving cells from people with MND, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. She said some candidates showed promise, but the work is continuing.
Why this matters
Katy’s experience includes laboratory methods that use donated skin cells and convert them into brain cells for research. This may support future studies of disease-related cell processes and potential treatments, but the reported work is at an early laboratory stage and does not currently change treatment for people with MND.
Limitations and context
