Two studies found that muscle ultrasound-detected fasciculations may provide useful information in motor neuron disease. In patients with signs limited to one body region, ultrasound added evidence beyond electromyography and helped some receive a diagnosis sooner. In a separate group of 40 people with ALS, fasciculations in several body regions and reduced lower-lung movement were associated with respiratory decline over 6 to 12 months.
Why this matters
These findings suggest muscle ultrasound could complement electromyography and conventional respiratory tests when clinicians are assessing possible motor neuron disease or monitoring ALS. They do not establish ultrasound as a replacement for existing tests or show that it improves treatment or outcomes.
Limitations and context
The studies were small and exploratory. The diagnostic study included few non-motor-neuron-disease controls, so the test’s specificity remains uncertain. The respiratory study requires validation in larger, independent groups, and the findings do not yet change clinical care.
