Male fruit flies fed lead produced offspring with altered oxidative-stress measures and lower antioxidant activity through three generations, despite those generations receiving no lead. The study also found reduced expression of two antioxidant genes, CAT and SOD1.
Why this matters
This adds animal-model evidence that paternal exposure to lead can be associated with biological changes beyond the directly exposed generation. It does not establish a link to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neurone disease (MND), and it does not change treatment for people with ALS or MND.
Limitations and context
The study used fruit flies, not people, and examined lead exposure rather than ALS or MND. Its findings are biological measurements in an experimental model; whether similar effects occur in humans, or affect ALS/MND risk or progression, remains unknown.
