The cyanotoxin 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (2,4-DAB) reduced survival in larval zebrafish more strongly than two related toxins tested in the same study. Exposure also altered startle responses and produced molecular changes linked by the researchers to neurodegeneration, including lower levels of the ALS-associated genes SOD1 and UBQLN4.
Why this matters
The findings add evidence that 2,4-DAB can affect the nervous system in a living animal model. They do not show that 2,4-DAB causes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in people or change treatment for anyone; human studies would be needed to assess that.
Limitations and context
This was a laboratory study in developing zebrafish larvae, not a clinical or human exposure study. The observed effects may not predict effects in people, and the molecular findings do not establish that the toxin causes ALS. The study tested selected exposure conditions and reported only minor effects on spontaneous movement.
