A study found that age at symptom onset was the strongest predictor of disease course among people with FUS-associated amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Early-onset cases progressed quickly and had shorter survival, while mid- to late-onset cases had outcomes similar to people with ALS without FUS mutations. The researchers identified three clinical patterns linked to different FUS mutations.

Limitations and context
The researchers analysed 22 patients from one centre and reviewed 289 previously published cases. The work was observational and used retrospective clinical histories, so it can identify associations but cannot establish causes or treatment benefits. The findings still need confirmation in larger, independent cohorts and in studies of gene-specific therapies.
