In a retrospective study of 431 people with suspected amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the Gold Coast criteria showed higher diagnostic sensitivity than the revised El Escorial and Awaji criteria. Adding neurofilament levels did not improve the sensitivity of the older criteria.
