What biomarkers do we have for MND? (opens in a new tab)Related topics
The Motor Neurone Disease Association has published an overview of biomarkers being investigated for motor neurone disease (MND). It describes neurofilament, RNA signatures and urinary p75 protein as research candidates for diagnosis, disease progression and clinical trials. None is presented as a definitive diagnostic test or established treatment guide.
Why this matters
Earlier or more precise biomarkers could eventually help distinguish MND from similar conditions, estimate how quickly it may progress and measure treatment effects in trials. The review describes potential uses, including monitoring people with genetic risk, but it does not show that these approaches are ready for routine care or that they change treatment now.
Limitations and context
This is an organisational educational blog, not a primary research study or clinical guideline. It summarises ongoing research and says neurofilament is not specific to MND and that researchers are still confirming which form is most useful. The biomarkers discussed would still need validation in clinical studies before routine use.
