Talks reported that changes in thinking and behaviour affect around half of people with motor neurone disease (MND). The Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioural ALS screen (ECAS) may help identify these changes, and some ECAS-related findings linked food-preference changes and repetitive actions with shorter survival. The report also said ECAS scores may relate to TDP-43 protein build-up in brain areas involved in thinking and behaviour.
Why this matters
Thinking and behaviour assessments could help clinicians recognise symptoms and support care decisions. The reported survival links may eventually help researchers improve predictions, but they do not currently change treatment or provide a reliable individual prognosis.
