Researchers described possible links between MND and changes in brain blood vessels, TDP-43, iron levels and other cellular processes at the 2024 International Symposium on ALS/MND. One mouse study found that increasing the protein DNAJB5 reduced abnormal TDP-43, while removing it worsened MND-like symptoms. Other presentations identified different TDP-43 patterns and gene changes linked to thinking and language problems.
Why this matters
These findings may help researchers develop biomarkers or identify targets for future treatments. They do not currently change treatment for people with MND: most findings were presented as early research, and the DNAJB5 result came from genetically altered mice.
