In a cohort of 2,056 adults aged 65 and older, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use near menopause or for 8 to 16 years was associated with lower odds of limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathological change (LATE-NC). The study examined dementia-related brain pathology, not amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neurone disease (MND).
Why this matters
This finding may help researchers study factors associated with LATE-NC, but it does not show that HRT prevents dementia or benefits people with ALS/MND. It does not change ALS/MND treatment.
