Researchers found that TDP-43 interacted with the DNA mismatch repair proteins MLH1 and MSH6 after DNA damage was induced in cultured neuronal cells. The interactions were also increased in spinal cord samples from people with ALS compared with age-matched controls. The study examines a possible mechanism of DNA repair in ALS and does not test a treatment.
Why this matters
The findings may help researchers investigate how TDP-43 and DNA repair are connected in ALS-affected neurons. They do not show that changing these protein interactions benefits people with ALS or that they can be used for diagnosis or treatment.
Limitations and context
This was a laboratory study using differentiated SH-SY5Y neuronal cultures and human spinal cord samples.
