Higher expression of TARDBP, the gene encoding TDP-43, was associated with advanced disease and poorer survival in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a type of liver cancer. In laboratory analyses, reducing TARDBP lowered markers linked to immune evasion and altered oxaliplatin-related signalling. The study also found associations between higher TARDBP and reduced responses to immune checkpoint treatment. [S1]

The findings may be relevant to researchers studying TDP-43 biology and cancer treatment. They do not show that TARDBP causes these outcomes, and they do not change treatment for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neurone disease (MND), because the study examined liver cancer rather than ALS/MND.
