A study in ageing yeast models found that FUS and TDP-43 protein aggregation did not track with toxicity. Mistranslation increased toxicity while further altering aggregation. The findings suggest that these aggregates may sometimes have a protective role in yeast, rather than directly causing toxicity.
Why this matters
The results may help researchers understand how ageing, protein quality control and translation errors affect ALS-related proteins. Because this was a yeast study, it does not change treatment for people with ALS or establish that the same effects occur in human neurons.
