Stem-cell vesicles improved ALS motor neurons in laboratory models
Extracellular vesicles from mesenchymal stem cells reversed disease-related protein changes in lab-grown motor neurons carrying C9ORF72, TARDBP or FUS mutations. The cells also showed functional improvements across these genetic forms of ALS.
Why this matters
The findings suggest vesicles may affect several ALS-related mechanisms across different genetic backgrounds. This was laboratory research in induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neurons, not a human treatment study, so it does not currently change treatment for people with ALS.
